Günther Uecker

Wolfenbüttel

After making station in Shiraz and Tehran, between June 16 and September 4 the castle museum Wolfenbüttel presented the exhibition “Günther Uecker – Homage to Hafez” for the very first time in Germany. With its direct neighbourhood to the Herzog August Library, the castle museum radiates an almost venerable culture-historical atmosphere. The library collection harbours the most precious scripts since the Middle Ages, and is today considered one of the most important research centres in the world. Surrounded by the works of the greatest writers, poets and scholars, Uecker granted the numerous visitors of the exhibition in Wolfenbüttel an insight into his pursuit of a united world. “The euro-centristic perspective that we got used to, is not always useful. It produces fears,” said Günther Uecker. The artist, born in Mecklenburg, counteracts these fears with his „Hafez-portfolio“, and encountered, also in Wolfenbüttel, a very positive resonance.

Beside the elaborate work cycle, photos from the successful opening exhibition in Shiraz decorated the walls of the castle museum to strengthen the message behind this impressive art project. By doing so, the long desired artistic exchange begins. The visitors of the museum in Wolfenbüttel were not only able to enjoy the same art works like the Iranian art enthusiasts in Shiraz and Tehran, but could also gain an impression of the event in Shiraz by photo documentation. “The presumably foreign that reaches us, is, from a historical perspective, a fundamental part of our culture,” says Günther Uecker. By his humanistically influenced work, Uecker builds bridges between the worlds and at the same time gives warnings to humanity for a better present and future.
