Father a farmer. Grown up on the W\u00fcstrow peninsula in the former GDR he starts an apprenticeship in 1949 and qualifies as a painter and advertising designer.<\/p>\n<h5>1949\u20131953<\/h5>\n<p>Studies at the Fachschule f\u00fcr angewandte Kunst in Wismar. Helps to organise political marches, designs window displays and a 20 metres high banner with a portrait of Stalin and enlargements of Picasso\u2019s Dove of Peace. Later studies at the Kunstakademie Berlin-Wei\u00dfensee.<\/p>\n<h5>1951<\/h5>\n<p>Participates in the World Youth Games in East Berlin. Finds himself confused and gripped by an encounter with the abstract world of Kandinsky in an exhibition in West Berlin.<\/p>\n<h5>1953<\/h5>\n<p>Moves to West Berlin and becomes one of the first \u2018squatters\u2019 in a room in the former Reichssozialgericht behind the later erected Neue Nationalgalerie in the Potsdamer Stra\u00dfe.<\/p>\n<h5>1955\u20131958<\/h5>\n<p>Studies at the Kunstakademie in D\u00fcsseldorf with Otto Pankok, drawn by the latter\u2019s socially-aware thinking and anti-fascist views. After making figurative and abstract woodcuts turns to manual structures (Fingermalereien and Dreckbild).<br \/>\nFirst nail object (1955\/56).<\/p>\n<h5>1957<\/h5>\n<p>Meets Yves Klein, Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. First nail pictures.<\/p>\n<h5>1958<\/h5>\n<p>Participates in the evening exhibition<em> Das rote Bild<\/em> organised by Mack and Piene in their studios in Gladbacher Stra\u00dfe 69. This leads to the Group ZERO which Uecker joins in 1961.<\/p>\n<h5>1960<\/h5>\n<p><em>Pfeilbilder: demonstration of arrow pictures<\/em> at the Festival d\u2019art d\u2019avantgarde in Paris.
